(Week 14) new media: determining or determined?

1.6.2 mapping Marshall McLuhan and Williams
1.6.3 Williams and the social shaping of technology
1.6.4 the many virtues of Sant McLuhan

ARISTOTLE
the idea that tools are extensions of soul and body.
MARX
Productions of Human industry
KAPP
Technology as a form of ‘organ projection’

three virtues of McLuhan.
1. The extension thesis:technology is an ‘extension of man’
2. The environmental thesis:‘the new media are not bridges between man and nature: they are nature’
3. The anti-content thesis:‘Societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media by which men communicate than by content of the communication

*Marshall McLuhan : new media change everything.
“The medium is the message”
“global village”

*Raymond Williams : media can only take effect through already present social processes and sustain existing power relations.

-The research direction to popular culture like movies and television

1.5.1 the question

(Week 11) what kind of history? 2

1.4.3 the return of the middle ages and other media archaeologies

This section looks at yet another historicising approach to new meda studies.

Kevin Robins :
- antique and forgotten media from our post - photographic vantage point.

The ludic : cinema and games

Rhetoric and spatialised memory

Edutainment and the eighteenth centuryenlightenment

1.4.4 a sense of deja vu & conclusion

Dejavu based on memory.
"already seen"; also called paramnesia,
is the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously .
although in some cases there is a firm sense that the experience "genuinely happened" in the past. Déjà vu has been described as "remembering the future."

-several media historians to record a sense of deja vu
-more recent development has historical and ethnographic research

My simple conclusion,
media artwork was continued all ..by dejavu memory..!

(week 10)what kind of history? 1

1.4.1 teleological accounts of new media

From cave paintings to mobile phones:
In Rheingold historical scheme

From photography to telematics:
extracting some sense from teleologies:
an eight-stage historical model of the progressive development of technologies of image production and transmission

Seeing the limitis of new media teleologies:
from an abstract system of logic, through the development of calculating machines, to the computer as a 'medium'

Foucault and genealogies of new media:
Foucauldian perspective

1.4.2 new media and the modernist concept of progress

- Computer artists come to the instrument from art rather than computer science.(Youngblood 1999:48)
- In the name of 'progress' our official culture is striving to force the new media to do the eork of the old.(McLuhan and Fiore 1967a : 81)
- Deferred future of new media :
because of technological underdevelopment.
:be used and understanding according to older, existing practices and ideas.
-The view of modernist aesthetic
:medium has to be genuinely new from the past and old media

The artists use anything that will help them express their message.
the artist used various media from time to time.
Modern art includes creations that can never be collected, owned, or exhibited in the traditional sense.

(week 9)change and continuity

Palarised over the degree of new media's newness.
Hinges upon the disciplinary frameworks and discourse
'Revolutionary'->Historical perspective

MEASURING 'NEWNESS'
How new? How large change?
We need to establish from what previous states things have changed.

Three Possibilities
1) How can we know that new thing is made from?
2) Familiar in everyday use or consumption
3) Degrees of novelty

Old media in new times?
-New media -> digital TV or IP TV
-Old media -> immersive VR, online, interactive, multimedia

The idea of 'remediation'
Jay Bolter & Richard Grusin
New Media Formulation
1. The digital technologies 'refashion older media'.
2. These older media 'refashion themselves to answer to the challenges of new media'.

New Media
- are not born in a vacuum.
- would have no resources to draw upon if they were not in touch and negotiating with the older media.

Media had changed so natural that we could hardly recognize it .
And constantly changing world and technology.
also media too..

(Week 8) the characteristics of new media 3

-virtuality = virtual reality = VR
-cyberspace

Virtual reality (VR) is a technology which allows a user to interact with a computer - simulated environment, be it a real or imagined one.

Cyberspace is a domain characterized by the use of electronics and the electromagnetic spectrum to store, modify, and exchange data via networked systems and associated physical infrastructures.

- Two kind of VR
- immersive VR
- VR of online network

.. what is real? what is virtual?..

We are looking forward to being able to enjoy by virtual reality .
We can do anything by the VR.
I think the VR will offer us a lot of opportunities to experience eventful thing .

(week 6)the characteristics of new media 2

-hypertext
-dispersal

Our book's definition

Hypertexts
Each one carries a number of pathways to other units
Analogue VS Digitally
Hypertext as non-sequential writing
pages have been sequential.
The link permits fully non sequential writing.

Dispersal
Dispersal is the product of shifts in our relationships
Consumption
Mass media and new media-differentiated audience is no longer a mass audience
The multiplicity of messages and source.

Hypertext is key to understanding new media..

key to understanding?
I think,
that is hypertext' maening [conecting or moving factor(other thing)]

And dispersal [shiting or speading]

(week 5)The characteristics of new media 1

In the last class, we learned about two characteristics of new media.

One of the characteristic is a digitality.

Through the lesson, we can define digitality ;"dematerialised from physical form","visual literacy"

Those definitions are not easy to understand for me.

Even though "Digital" is more innovative technic than "Analog",

"Digital" could not contribute to me more artistic emotion than "Analog".

Another characteristic which we learned is an interactivity.

When Professor Yoon explaned this word using comparing with feedback, I could not understand easily.

On the other hand, comunications with the textbook can help me know the meaning well.

To be honest, I don't know deeply yet about several words like instrumental, idealogical, stability and fluidity.

(week 4)What are new media ?2

In the second lesson of "New media"..
What is the reason for importance of using word, "New" which is placed infront of "media".

We have learned about it through lots of examples such as computer games, arts with technic, and internet.

I remember three important words : "intermedium", "textual" and "representation"
hmm...
Those are very difficult meaning to me....

I think
As an intermedium,
"New media" can not only connect vitual to reality
but also represent modern society.

(week 3)What are new media? 1

"NEW"....
didn't exist before....
something better than old thing....
The distinction between new media and old media is not clearly thing.

but
certainly new media is
developing ideas or forward thinking that may take of form of technology.
It is anything that is technologically on the cutting edge.

Increased productivity and educational opportunity are caused by new media.
and globalization too.

The new media is a combination of media art and new technology.

These days ,media artists are now starting to make content with the specifically tools for new media art.

I think ,"new media" in these days will become old thing someday...

(week 3)What are new media? 1

"what is media?"

I was not accustomed to such a question...
Professor said "media is a medium between paint and canvas"..
If so, What is media's role??

I think, the massmedia can explain that question.
Tv, radio, newspaper..
we the massmedia call the like that things..
They are necessary for life in recent society.

hmm...
I can not explain between media and human, but I could know their relationships in small...

and
flankly speaking, I don't remember middle part of lecture ..
western culture...post modernism....
anyway~

one more thing!
what is NEW?media..?
for example
long time ago , people didn't know computer' power. However
The Computer is greatest technology in this time.

I think, they are much alike in character..

(week 2)Theoretical Background 1: Traditional Thoughts on Art

9/11
My first time in media aesthetics class.

'art'..
I'm never thought seriously about the art.
what is art?.. why need it ?... why is it nessary to... ?

Before took this first lecture ,I didn't know that...
I live with art ..always.. that is music , paint, song, picture...whatever..
I gain a lot of enjoyable thing from art..

I learned many scholar's definition about art this time.
Their definition are different each other.
We could not define exactly...what is art..

So we will learning about that through this class with a variety of subjects..

I expect next time~
